3 Tips to Avoid Common Moving Day Issues

by Otto Moilanen

Are you getting stressed out just thinking about your upcoming move? Did your last move turn out to be a disaster and you want to avoid making the same mistakes this time? The average American will move more than 10 times throughout their life, or approximately once every 5-8 years. With each move often being done for financial reasons, it only makes sense to be as efficient with your moving process as possible. With practice comes knowledge and with knowledge comes ease. some issues that you may have faced in the past and how to deal with them before they crop up include:

Illness

Unlike a lot of potential moving problems, illness is something that you may only find out on the day before the move. Whether it's just a cold or some serious food poisoning, moving when you're under the weather can sometimes feel like torture. If you hire residential movers ahead of time, you won't have to worry as much about whether or not your illness will impact your ability to get out of your old place and into your new one. It will also help if you have a trusted friend or relative who can be there to supervise the move if you need to go to the doctor or visit the hospital.

Lack of boxes

Most people probably have more things in their home than they realize. Looking at your living room, you might assume that you can fit everything into a couple of medium-sized boxes, only to find out that you need a large and several smaller boxes as well. This can cause you to quickly run out of boxes, leaving you scrambling to find more before the residential movers show up on your move date. As a good rule of thumb, you should get an extra 10-20% more boxes than you think you need. Consider it similar to car insurance in that you may not need to use it but it's there just in case.

New home issues

One thing that you have little to no control over is the state of your next home. For instance, the previous occupants might still be there, a pipe might have burst and flooded the place, or the electricity might not have been turned on in time. To try to limit surprises, you should attempt to get to the home ahead of your residential movers. This way, you can inspect the place and make sure that everything is ready before your stuff gets there.

It's always a good idea to have a storage facility waiting for your belongings if the home turns out to be unfit for habitation right now. You should also have a folder containing contact information for the utility companies, your new landlord, etc. so that you're able to get in touch with the person or people who can remedy the issue that you're facing.
